Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The 2 Series Gran Coupe offers optional Active Park Distance Control that use rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a collision. The AMG CLA doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the AMG CLA.

Both the 2 Series Gran Coupe and the AMG CLA have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available all wheel drive.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the AMG CLA’s (12 vs. 5 years).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the 2 Series Gran Coupe for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Mercedes doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the AMG CLA.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s reliability 30 points higher than the AMG CLA.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the 2 Series Gran Coupe first among small premium cars in their 2024 Initial Quality Study. The AMG CLA isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Mercedes With 28 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks BMW higher than Mercedes.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Mercedes vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks BMW 20 places higher in reliability than Mercedes.

The M235i xDrive Gran Coupe’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (332 vs. 295) than the AMG CLA 35’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

On the EPA test cycle the 2 Series Gran Coupe gets better mileage than the AMG CLA:

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe higher (3 to 7 out of 10) than the Mercedes AMG CLA (2 to 5). This means the 2 Series Gran Coupe produces up to 28.8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the AMG CLA every 15,000 miles.

For better stopping power the M235i xDrive Gran Coupe’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the AMG CLA:

The 2 Series Gran Coupe has a standard space-saver spare (not available on M235i) so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the AMG CLA; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed. Some tire options on the AMG CLA don’t have a run-flat feature, either.

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 300 pounds less than the Mercedes AMG CLA.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe is 6.3 inches shorter than the AMG CLA, making the 2 Series Gran Coupe easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe has 1.3 inches more front headroom, .4 inches more front shoulder room and .5 inches more rear legroom than the AMG CLA.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe has a much larger trunk than the AMG CLA (15.1 vs. 11.6 cubic feet).

With its sedan body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the 2 Series Gran offers cargo security. The AMG CLA’s non-lockable remote release defeats cargo security.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The AMG CLA doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
