To maximize occupant safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the BMW 4 Series Coupe have pretensioners to eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision. The Maserati GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer pretensioners.

The 4 Series Coupe’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The BMW 4 Series Coupe has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The 4 Series Coupe has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

The 4 Series Coupe’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the GranTurismo Folgore.

The 4 Series Coupe offers an optional Surround View to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The GranTurismo Folgore only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The 4 Series Coupe has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the GranTurismo Folgore’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the 4 Series Coupe has standard Cross Traffic Warning, helping the driver avoid collisions. Maserati charges extra for Rear Cross Path on the GranTurismo Folgore.

The 4 Series Coupe has standard BMW Assist, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the 4 Series Coupe and the GranTurismo Folgore have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available all wheel drive.

The 4 Series Coupe’s corrosion warranty is 8 years and unlimited miles longer than the GranTurismo Folgore’s (12/unlimited vs. 4/50,000).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the 4 Series Coupe for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Maserati doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the GranTurismo Folgore.

There are almost 4 times as many BMW dealers as there are Maserati dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the 4 Series Coupe’s warranty.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the 4 Series Coupe can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

For better maneuverability, the 4 Series Coupe’s turning circle is 3.3 feet tighter than the GranTurismo Folgore’s (37.4 feet vs. 40.7 feet). The 4 Series Coupe xDrive’s turning circle is 1.3 feet tighter than the GranTurismo Folgore’s (39.4 feet vs. 40.7 feet).

The BMW 4 Series Coupe may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 950 to 1300 pounds less than the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore.

The 4 Series Coupe is 7.3 inches shorter than the GranTurismo Folgore, making the 4 Series Coupe easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the 4 Series Coupe a Compact car, while the GranTurismo Folgore is rated a Subcompact.

The 4 Series Coupe has a much larger trunk than the GranTurismo Folgore (15.5 vs. 9.5 cubic feet).

The 4 Series Coupe’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer folding rear seats, only a ski pass-through.

With its coupe body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the 4 Series offers cargo security. The GranTurismo Folgore’s non-lockable remote release defeats cargo security.

The 4 Series Coupe offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The 4 Series Coupe’s optional Parking Assistant Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The BMW 4 Series comes in coupe, convertible and four door hatchback bodystyles; the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore isn’t available as a convertible or four door.

The 4 Series Coupe is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
