Compare the2027 BMW 5 Series VS 2027 Genesis G80

The BMW 5 Series has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The G80 doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

The 5 Series has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The G80 doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

The BMW 5 Series’ optional Surround View offers available integrated front and rear camera washers, ensuring clear, all-weather visibility without the need for manual cleaning. In contrast, the Genesis G80 lacks camera washers, requiring you to manually clean the cameras for optimal performance.

Compared to metal, the 5 Series’ plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Genesis G80 has a metal gas tank.

Both the 5 Series and the G80 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all-wheel drive and around view monitors.

Side impacts caused 23% of all road fatalities in 2018, down from 29% in 2003, when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety introduced its side barrier test. In order to continue improving vehicle safety, the IIHS has started using a more severe side impact test: 37 MPH (up from 31 MPH), with a 4189-pound barrier (up from 3300 pounds). The results of this newly developed test demonstrates that the BMW 5 Series is safer than the G80:

The 5 Series’ corrosion warranty is 5 years longer than the G80’s (12 vs. 7 years).

There are over 72 percent more BMW dealers than there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the 5 Series’ warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the 5 Series’ reliability 19 points higher than the G80.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW above average in long-term dependability. With 24 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Genesis is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks BMW 16 places higher in reliability than Genesis.

The 550e xDrive can travel with zero emissions for 33 miles. The G80 can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

Regenerative brakes improve the 5 Series’ fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The G80 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the BMW 5 Series uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The G80 2.5T requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

For better stopping power the 540i xDrive’s brake rotors are larger than those on the G80:

The 5 Series’ standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs standard on the G80 2.5T are solid, not vented.

The 5 Series’ standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the G80 2.5T’s standard 50 series tires. The 5 Series’ optional 245/35R21 front and 275/30R21 rear tires have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile than the G80 Prestige’s 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the 5 Series has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the G80 2.5T. The 5 Series’ optional 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels on the G80 Prestige.

The 530i xDrive handles at .95 G’s, while the G80 pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The 550e xDrive executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.7 seconds quicker than the G80 (24.5 seconds @ .81 average G’s vs. 26.2 seconds @ .68 average G’s).

The 5 Series has a much larger trunk than the G80 (18.4 vs. 13.1 cubic feet).

The 5 Series’ standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The G80 doesn’t offer folding rear seats, only a ski pass-through.

The 5 Series’ standard Comfort Access allows you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the trunk, and start the car, all without removing the key from pocket or purse. Proximity Key standard on the G80 doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear doors.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The 5 Series’ headlights were rated “Good” by the IIHS, while the G80’s headlights are rated “Acceptable.”

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the 5 Series offers optional cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The G80 doesn’t offer cornering lights. The 5 Series also offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

The 5 Series is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The G80 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Consumer Reports® recommends the BMW 5 Series, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Genesis G80 isn't recommended.

Car and Driver performed a comparison test in its September 2026 issue and they ranked the BMW 540i xDrive higher than the Genesis G80 3.5T Prestige Black.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the 5 Series first among upper midsize premium cars in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The G80 isn’t in the top three.

The BMW 5 Series outsold the Genesis G80 by almost seven to one during 2025.
